wolfmother redux

This is a public version of my time at the concert so that sirlarkins can link it to his post about the concert...

The Wolfmother concert ROCKED.
I have never been to a rock concert before. I have seen R.E.M., Tori Amos, Cibo Matto and some awesome local bands in Los Angeles, but never what I would consider "rock".

We got to the Warfield at 7:15PM and it was fairly empty. We found a good spot to stand. It was the third tier on the ground floor. Just far enough away and yet a great view. The opening act was just fucking awful. They were just all about posturing and the lead singer's voice pooped out about half-hour into their set. Pathetic. They were some band from Kentucky. Just terrible. No stage presence or stamina. Plus, they were constantly spitting or throwing water into the crowd. It was gross.

After the opening band's way-too-long set, Wolfmother came on and they simply rocked out. It was so great. They played most of the songs off their current album and one new one. They also played some works in progress. They were fucking rocking during my favorite song of theirs: "Colossal". It was beyond awesome. They did a great job. The lead guitar/lead vocal guy was great. He sounds better in person and he was working a serious 'fro and was wearing super skinny jeans, a long sleeve shirt and awesome black vest. David and I agreed that he looked like the archetypal Bard. So cool! The keyboardist/bassist had a great presence and he kind of looked like a young Tom Jones. He was in a t-shirt and pants. The drummer was also wonderful--consistant and powerful. He was also in a t-shirt and pants. The band as a whole was amazing to see because they are all great performers and they each have a strong presence.

I had a great time. The audience was generally fine. A lot of "devil's horns", pointing fingers and fist pumping went on, but it was ok. I did quite a bit of head rocking and hooting myself. It was awesome to see the band in person and they seemed to love being in front of us. There was a lot of love.
